One of the keys to a happy life is stability. When you’re running in all different directions all the time its no fun, but when you are able to go with the flow of things and kind of develop a routine things are always better. And a big factor of stability is friends. Just think if you didn’t have that one tight group of a couple of friends, what would your life be like right now? I know mine would not be anything like it is right now, it would be very hectic and out of control because there wouldn’t be those people there to help me out when I need something or need someone to talk to. Friends are the next best thing to family and they pretty much are family.
In the book, A Question of Power by Bessie Head, the main character Elizabeth seems to be struggling with her life and sanity, but she meets a couple of good friends along the way that truly help her straighten everything out. These two friends were Kenosi and Tom, who she meets in a co-op she joins.
Tom is a very smart man who is there because he is part of the Peace Corp. He is a helper and he plays a major role in helping Elizabeth by listening to her and her problems and also giving her some good advice. We see his role in Elizabeth’s life when she says “I’m going to take him as the symbol of male nobility and compare his every word against my inner chaos.” (135-136) Elizabeth looked up to him very much and relied on him a lot.
Then there is Kenosi who is Elizabeth’s best friend. Elizabeth depends on Kenosi for a lot. Kenosi is someone that Elizabeth can lean when she really needs help. They both depended on each other, especially with things like the farming. “They began to think together again. Tomorrow they would plant out more carrots and beetroot; there’d be time today for seedling work. And so the morning flew by. The world had returned to normal again.” (204) Without each other they were lost, but the dependence on each other I believe helped heel both of them. When they were apart the world, in their eyes, was in chaos.
In your life, friends are a huge thing. Especially that one really close group you have. Without them where would you be or what would you do or turn to when you need help? Before Elizabeth had some real true friends she struggled in getting her life together, but once she had that close little group she started to turn everything around.
